Goliath pig dehairing system

BMPE supplied and installed the largest pig dehairing machine currently offered by Hubert Haas — the Goliath single-chamber dehairing system — at a processing facility in Zimbabwe. The project covered the transportation, positioning, installation and integration of this substantial piece of equipment into an existing production line.

The Goliath is a single-chamber dehairing system fitted with a heavy-duty scraping roller. Specially designed rubber beaters with metal scrapers mechanically loosen and remove hair from the skin as each carcass is processed through the chamber. With individually adjustable dehairing times and machine filling levels, it adapts to different production requirements and operating conditions.

  1. 1

    Tested before it travelled

The machine was first received in South Africa, where BMPE’s technicians inspected and tested the equipment to make sure it was ready for installation.

  2. 2

    Moving a giant

The first hurdle was finding a transport solution capable of moving the enormous new tank directly into the plant — while existing equipment was removed to make space.

  3. 3

    Positioned and integrated

Inside the facility the new equipment was carefully positioned, levelled and integrated into the existing production line, in close coordination between the installation team and the plant.

The highlight of the project was seeing the completed system successfully commissioned — processing pigs through the newly installed line.

BMPE supplied and installed a complete Kerres chilling and smoking system — a Kerres Chiller IKK 2850/4-C, Kerres Smoker JS-HV 2850/4-C and Kerres HSR 400 smoking unit — assembled and integrated into the client’s existing production facility, including the associated electrical, steam, pneumatic and ducting connections.

  1. 1

    From delivery to installation

BMPE’s technicians worked alongside the rigging team to safely unload and position the equipment. The machines were removed from their transport containers and inspected, while the wider plant was assessed so the new equipment could integrate into the existing setup. The chiller units were assembled to form the complete chilling chamber, and the smoking equipment positioned and assembled alongside it.

  2. 2

    Technical integration

All electrical wiring, motors, steam piping and pneumatic air lines were connected and neatly routed; the air and smoking ducts were installed and secured to the smoking chamber, and the cleaning pipe connections completed. Particular attention went to keeping cables and piping safely clear of the steam lines.

  3. 3

    A complete installation

Final checks were carried out on the steam connections, electrical wiring and pipework before the installation areas were cleaned and handed over — the chilling and smoking equipment brought together as one integrated production system, ready for operation.

From initial inspection and positioning through to final connections and finishing work — careful coordination between BMPE’s technicians, the rigging team and the client.

MH212 SAS brine injector — installed, commissioned, optimised

BMPE installed, commissioned and optimised a Nowicki SAS 212 injector — from initial machine checks and production setup through product testing, optimisation of brine pick-up and operator training, ensuring the machine was correctly installed, tested and prepared for production.

  1. 1

    Installation & commissioning

The machine was positioned in its designated area, the electrical power supply and compressed air connection checked, then started up and thoroughly tested. The next day it was set up for production, with a program created specifically for the customer’s meat pack application and product trials run to determine the required brine pick-up.

  2. 2

    Optimising performance

Initial testing achieved a pick-up the client wasn’t completely satisfied with. Careful adjustment of the machine settings — reducing belt speed, increasing pressure — brought the pick-up to a satisfactory level that met the customer’s production requirements, after which the machine ran throughout the day without issue.

  3. 3

    Operator training

The customer’s team received practical training on cleaning, disassembling and reassembling the injector, plus comprehensive training on operation and functionality — recipe creation and adjustment, correct machine settings and production procedures — so operators could confidently achieve consistent results.

Despite a few site-related challenges, the Nowicki SAS 212 was handed over running reliably and achieving the desired product pick-up.
